Athens-Graveside services for Herbert Gatlin, 85 Athens were held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at Oaklawn Memorial Park with Dr. Joe Warren officiating.
Mr. Gatlin was a lifetime resident of Athens, a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, and a 50 yr. Mason. He committed himself to the business and economic development of the community. Mr. Gatlin grew up in the brick industry and was formerly the president of Texas Clay Industries in Malakoff. After leaving Texas Clay Industries, he owned Reliance Clay Products with plants in Ferris, Mineral Wells, and Lindale. He then served multiple terms as mayor of Athens. Afterwards Mr. Gatlin was instrumental in the creation of the Athens Economic Development Corporation and served as Executive Director until he retired in 2008.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Willis Gatlin; his son and daughter-in-law Ed and Paige Gatlin, his daughter and son-in-law Ann Gatlin and Dorr Scherz; andhis four grandchildren Aaron Scherz, Alexadria Gatlin, Lloyd Scherz, and Justin Gatlin.
