Ronald Dean Ratliff Sr.

Ronald Dean Ratliff, Sr., a.k.a. “FREEBIRD” or his CB trucking names, “MT POCKETS” or “FLAT BROKE,” passed away Tuesday morning, October 13, 2020, at the Morrow County Hospital.

On April 3, 1951, Ron was born in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Corbett Eugene and Margaret Luella (Mitchell) Ratliff.  He attended Central High School and then served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Ron spent his entire career as an over-the-road truck driver, working many years for Holland.  He would regularly pull doubles and triples.

A majority of Ron’s time was spent on the road driving trucks, but when he was home and had free time he loved to be out on his Harley – Davidson.  He was a rider his whole life.  He enjoyed old time rock and roll and watching Westerns.  In his retirement years he liked going to the grandchildren’s sporting and other events they were involved in.

Ron was an extremely independent and ornery man.  He had a never-ending line of jokes and stories and was very sharp-witted.

Ron is survived by his six children: Lorraine Dagon, Ronald Ratliff Jr., Jason Ratliff, Vickie Hughett, Justin Howell, Travis Ratliff; grandchildren: Collin Ratliff, Samantha Ratliff, Jessica Ratliff, Jordan Hughett, Drew Hughett, Ciera Rawlings, Cora Kinney, Robert Kinney, Travis Ratliff Jr., Jenna Ratliff, Isabella Ratliff; great grandchildren: Jax Ratliff, Jacen Rawlings, Jaymi Rawlings, Kaiden Jones Aleeh, Kalynn Jones Aleeh, Chance Thomas; two siblings: Jack Ratliff and Chris McCoy; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Jason Ratliff Jr. and Janie Ratliff; and two sisters: Margaret Ann Cox and Pamela Nixon.

Ron’s family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2020, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Military honors performed by the Active Duty U.S. Marine Corps, VFW Post 8054 and AMVETS Post 87 will conclude the visitation at 5:00 p.m.
