Mary Jo (Ansley) Bowman, age 83, of Mount Gilead, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, April 1, 2021, at her residence surrounded by the love of her family.
Mary Jo was born on December 31, 1937, in Marion, to Wilber “Dwight” and Catherine E. (Shoemaker) Ansley who preceded her in death. In 1956, Mary Jo graduated from Mount Gilead High School and later went on to study accounting at Marion Technical College.
She worked at HPM as the secretary in their service department for several years and for more than 20 years Mary Jo was happily employed with EDCO Drilling Company. Mary Jo also worked for ExhibitPro where she would retire from.
Mary Jo had two daughters, Karen and Sharon, from a previous marriage to the late John W. Bachelder. The girls and Mary Jo enjoyed many mother/daughter outings and trips together over the years. On September 21, 1991, Mary Jo married Max C. Bowman who preceded her in death on December 23, 2011. Together they shared nearly 20 years of marriage.
Mary Jo had a heart of gold and loved to serve her community. While a member of First Baptist Church, Mary Jo served as a trustee and on the search committee. She also enjoyed singing in the choir. Mary Jo was a member of Beta Progress, Red Hat Society, Silver Sneakers, and played cards in a few bridge clubs. Her service also included sitting on the Red Cross Board, the Library Board, and volunteering with both Hospice and Heartbeat of Morrow County. Mary Jo and Max enjoyed dancing in the Hicks and Chicks square and round dance club.
With a sense of adventure and a love to travel, Mary Jo enjoyed traveling the United States and camping. She traveled to her daughter’s home in Florida each winter to enjoy a month or two in the sunshine. Some of her favorite trips were to Yellowstone, Durango, and flying over the Grand Canyon. Mary Jo and Max also enjoyed a cruise to Alaska. Her daughters remember their mom buying a “pop up” camper when they were young. Mary Jo took them on many camping outings to places like Old Man’s cave, Lake Erie and the state parks across Ohio.
Mary Jo was a wonderful homemaker and always tended to the needs of her family. She was an avid baker and cook. Mary Jo loved to host her family for special occasions and was a big contributor to meals at the church as well. Outside the home, she enjoyed gardening. She was also extremely talented in sewing and an excellent seamstress. Mary Jo was honored to make the wedding dresses for both of her girls.
Left to cherish her memory includes her daughters: Karen (Michael) Kurilec and Sharon (Craig) Hackworth both of Mount Gilead; step-children and their families: Raymond (Doris) Bowman of Wooster, Brad (Trudy) Bowman of Montana, and Vikki (Stephan) Leasure of Ashland; grandchildren: Brenna (Ryan) Ball, Tanner (Kristen) Kurilec, Joey (Chelsea-fiancée) Hackworth, and Cody Hackworth; a brother and his family, Thomas (Kathy) Ansley of Springfield; and a wonderful friend who provided great support, Ken Bendle.
Her family will greet friends from 10 to 11 AM, on Monday, April 5, 2021, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel. (67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338) A service to celebrate her life will follow at 11 AM with Pastor Stephan Bloomfield officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
