Mary Glass Brown

CHARDON – Mary Glass Brown, age 83, of Chardon, passed on to glory on Dec. 26, 2021, at Ohman Family Living in Newbury Township.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1938, in East Cleveland, to Russell G. and Mabel (nee Hutchinson) Glass, and graduated from Euclid High School in 1955, where she was Swimmer of the Year.

She then graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1959 with a degree in elementary and secondary physical education, and general science.

During her four years at OWU, she was active in swimming (president of the Synchronized Swim Club), volleyball, softball and basketball.

Mary then taught at Wickliffe Jr. High School for four years and was an advisor to the gym leaders, cheerleaders and the Honor Society.

She also volunteered her time as a camp counselor and a swimming/boating instructor at Camp Julia Crowell in West Richfield. She was also a canoe trip counselor for two years and troop camping director for one year at Hilaka Camp.

She continued her volunteering at the Chardon Pool with the swim program for four years.

Mary served as a Cub Scout den mother for four years, volunteered as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and served as the district chairperson for the Girl Scouts for 25 years, during which she was named the “Distinguished Member” for Geauga County.

She served as troop services director, Junior Scout advisor, Cadet and Senior advisor, was a delegate to the Lake Erie Council for three years, and as the director for Day Camp at Big Creek Park for two years.

Mary was also a substitute teacher for Chardon Schools for four years, where she also coached volleyball.

Mary’s memberships include the Chardon United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women for four years, was a Sunday School administrator and teacher, a Lay Leader and Mentor.

She spent 15 years with the Chardon Square Association (two years as president), and six years with the Chardon Recreations Board (two years as president).

She was also self-employed for 11 years as a dealer with Antiques on the Square, and spent many memorable years working at Framefinders on Chardon Square.

Mary loved spending her summers with her husband, family and friends at their summer home in Ontario, Canada, where she had been going every year since she was 10 years old.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1960; children, Scott D. (Jackie), of Chardon, Karen L. (Donald Wayne) McLeod, of Chardon, Keith A. (Emily), of Alexander City, Ala., Kathy A. (James) Tracz, of Concord Township, and Douglas C., of Chardon; grandchildren, Ryan and Mackenzie Brown, of Chardon, Matthew, Hannah, Nathan and Sarah Brown, of Alexander City, Ala., and Jacob and Katelyn Tracz, of Concord Township.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Janet Bluem; and brother, Thomas Glass.

A visitation will be Dec. 30, 2021, from 4-7 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 116 South St., Chardon, where a family directed service will follow the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St., Chardon, OH 44024.
