BELLVILLE: Larry E. Barr passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 in Ohio Health MedCentral Mansfield Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 77.

He was born December 23, 1940 in Mansfield to parents Robert & Effie (Ohler) Barr and was graduated from Madison High School in 1958.  It was during high school he and Monya Backensto started courting; their first date with a few friends at the Friday night football game.  The couple married October 28, 1961.

Patriotic, Larry served in the Air National Guard with the 179th for six years, and also served a year of active duty from 1961- 1962.

Larry worked 19 years at Tappan in engineering and also Hydromatic Pump in Ashland, Chem Tech Consultants, and Ideal Electric before his retirement in 2005.  He also worked part time at Wade & Gatton Nurseries during retirement.

A long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Larry previously served as Sunday school superintendent and on church council.  He was a member of 4-H and enjoyed leading 4-H clubs when his children were active.  A proud supporter of his children and grandchildren, Larry was always a presence at their activities.  He was also an active volunteer with the Bellville Neighborhood Outreach Center.

Larry bowled every Wednesday night for many years.  In little notebooks, he kept meticulous records about every game.  Though he never scored at perfect game he did get a 299!  He was zealous gardener with pristine landscape at home.  Larry enjoyed hunting rabbit and deer.  Together he and Monya enjoyed traveling, especially their trip to Alaska.

Outgoing, Larry couldn’t go anywhere without running into a friend, and if he found none, he made a new friend.  Ornery, he loved to tell jokes and tease.  He leaves a legacy of kindness towards others and a happy disposition.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Monya Barr of Bellville; three children Lori and Terry Cutlip of Bellville, Steve Barr of Bellville and Greg and Ericka Barr of Wooster; 5 grandchildren who called him “Plain Grandpa” Melissa and Ty Jackson of Galion, Allison and Jason Nicholas of Westerville, Cory and Melinda Booth of Ontario, Ashley Barr of Lucas, and Walker Barr of Wooster; five great grandchildren Bronson and Brady Dalenberg, Brenna Nelson, Dempsey and Ayleigh Nicholas, and new baby Nicholas due in April.  Larry is also survived by brothers-in-law and sister-in-law  Bruce Steel of Bellville, and Larry and Nancy Backensto of Florida; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his step mother Edna (Milem Maxwell) Barr and sister Linda Steel.

The Barr family will receive friends Monday, November 12, 2018  from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring Larry’s  life will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Daniel Cammarn  will speak. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
