Dorothy Newton Allyn, age 100, passed away peacefully Oct. 15, 2020, in Kent.
She was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Windber, Pa., to Robert and Maude Newton. She moved with her parents and her younger brother, George Edward Newton, to Pittsburgh, Toledo and finally Cleveland Heights, as her father earnedpromotions in his career with H.J. Heinz Co.
Dorothy graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1937 and attended nurse’s training at Huron Road Hospital, where she worked as a registered nurse.
She married Wilfred Earl Allyn Jr. on Nov. 29, 1940, and their marriage lasted until his death on Father’s Day 2008.
Dorothy was a loving mother and a gentle soul who delighted in cooking, growing orchids and cacti, and entertainingfamily and friends. In later years she and her husband took great pleasure in round-the-world cruises and wintering in Florida.
She was a devoted friend who often wrote letters by hand to the people she loved and created handcrafted gifts for family and friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and her detailed memory of a full life.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Sherry Gedeon, Becky Demko, Robert (Sarah) Allyn and Scot (Melanie) Allyn. She is also survived by grandchildren Ben (Sarah) Demko, Adam Demko, Graham Gedeon, Heather (Randy) Betke, and Daphne, Abigail and Chloe Allyn; and great-grandchildren, Brandi Betke and Lena, Max and Ava Demko.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, George; and son-in-law, Steve Demko.
Memorial service will take place at a future date.
