Daniel P. Stelzer, age 63, of Sunbury, Ohio finally found eternal rest on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at Centerburg Pointe Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.
Dan was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 2, 1956 and grew up in northern Columbus neighborhoods. He attended Whetstone High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp shortly after his 17th birthday. Proudly serving his country for 4 years, he was assigned to 2 Mediterranean cruises on the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier where he acquired an affinity for the smell of jet fuel and an interest in airplanes.
Dan was an animal and nature lover, often bringing home stray kittens and catching butterflies. He enjoyed pet birds, turtles, fish, dogs and cats. He spent leisure time playing golf, working in the yard, driving his Miata convertible, and traveling. Moving to the Sunbury area over 20 years ago, he was often seen around town in Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses. Dan was a meticulous dresser, very familiar with an iron, a can of spray starch and plenty of shoe polish, habits he likely learned in the Marine Corp.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, James Stelzer, and a brother, Michael Martin. He is survived by his devoted wife and caregiver, Joann Hingsbergen, step-daughter Sara (Ryan) Blatz of Phoenix, Arizona, his mother Ruth McKay, siblings Karen (Tom) Earley, Christie (Larry) Engel, Kimberlee Toy, Kelly Ewing, Kathy Stelzer, and James Stelzer II. He was a favorite “Uncle Danny” to numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Daniel’s memory to the Humane Society of Delaware County.
Services are being planned for a later date.
