The passing of an instrumental member of Eagles Aerie #2275, Trustee and Past President, Dan “Big D” Winkler Sr. passed away peacefully at his home around 6:30 pm, Sunday, August 23, 2020. Dan’s friendly face, cheerful disposition, and dedication to the Aerie will never be forgotten. He loved the club and its members very much, and he gave so much of himself to all of us. “Big D” was the epitome of ‘Service Above Self’. He will be sorely missed.
He was born November 13, 1953, in Lodi, Ohio to parents Roy C. & Hazel (Montgomery) Winkler Sr. After he graduated from Clover Leaf High School with the class of 1972, he married a young lady named Linda Ickes on April 14, 1974. The pair have spent 46 wonderful years together.
Dan was a truck driver for 40+ years. He drove all different kinds of trucks for different companies but was mainly a long-distance driver. Most recently before retirement, Dan drove truck for White Line Transportation Company.
He was a musician for over 40 years, playing the bass guitar and lead vocals. Dan loved karaoke night with his son and daughter and picking his flat-top guitar around a campfire. In Dan’s younger years he obtained the prestigious award of becoming an Eagle Scout, which is the highest achievement of the toughest challenges in boy scouts. He was also an excellent cook, especially known for his made from scratch buttermilk biscuits. Dan enjoyed fishing with his grandson and loved his family very much.
He is survived by his loving wife Linda A. (Ickes) Winkler of Perrysville; his children Daniel R. Winkler Jr. and Angela A. Winkler both of Perrysville; grandson Korben R. Winkler of Perrysville; siblings Shirley McDougal of Seville, Donna Farner of Sterling, Bonna Gobert of Smithville, Harry (Fran) Winkler of Arlington, TX, and Roy C. (Joanie)Winkler Jr. of Medina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by grandson Tyler J. Endsley; brothers-in-law Henry C. McDougal Sr., Randall Farner, and David Gobert; his niece Carmen Collins; father and mother-in-law John D. and Mary M. Ickes.
Dan’s family will receive friends Monday, August 31, 2020, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Snyder Funeral Home Lindsey Chapel, Loudonville. A Celebration of Life honoring Dan will be held at a later date.
Contributions in Dan’s memory to the American Diabetes Association may be made at the funeral home.
