Carolyn Files, age 83, of Marion, OH, passed away Saturday morning, July 24, 2021, at Sage Park Assisted Living in Gahanna, OH, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
On December 19, 1937, Carolyn was born in Fairfield, Illinois, a daughter of the late Morris and Pauline (Wolfe) Holmes. She graduated from Fairfield Senior High School in the Class of 1955. She furthered her education by receiving her Associates of Applied Science in Nursing from Marion Technical College in 1979.
Carolyn met the love of her life, Thomas I. Files, while in high school. They dated for a few years and then were united in marriage on July 1, 1956. They shared over 63 loving years together as husband and wife before he preceded her in death on March 3, 2020.
After having her children, Carolyn spent many years at home taking care of and raising them. As they grew up, she then began her career as a registered nurse. For almost a decade, she worked as a school nurse for Marion City Schools. She then took a job as a public health nurse at the Marion City Health Department and later was promoted to serve as the Director of Nursing. She was always volunteering her time away from work setting up immunization clinics and other public health assistance.
A woman of faith, Carolyn was a lifelong member of the Disciples of Christ Church, worshipping at Central Christian Church in Marion. She was very involved and served in numerous capacities within the church.
Carolyn was always having fun, laughing and telling humorous stories – often related to one of their very loved but naughty dogs she and Tom always seemed to have in their lives. She was the best storyteller and one of the funniest people you could ever meet. Her presence always lit up a room.
Carolyn’s family was near and dear to her heart. She especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren and having the family get together yearly at their beach getaway in Longboat Key, FL.
Carolyn had the heart of a servant. The nurse in her was always helping, even when she wasn’t at work. She especially loved to help those in need.
Carolyn will be dearly missed by her three children: Tracy (Tom) Magnuson, Steve Files and Scott (Tammy) Files; six grandchildren: Blake Files, Julie Magnuson, Kent Magnuson, Kennedy Files, Reagan Files, and Grant Files; two sisters: Betty Hodge, Patty (Jim) Pollard; a sister-in-law, Kitty Holmes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Jean McConnell, and her brother, Morris Holmes Jr.
Carolyn will be laid to rest with her husband at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, IL, at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Carolyn’s name may be made to the North Central Ohio – Marion County chapter of the United Way, in support of their Healthy Families initiative.
