CHARDON – Carolyn “Carol” A. (nee Kangas) Thornton, age 79, of Chardon, passed away Dec. 26, 2021, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.
Born Dec. 5, 1942, in Painesville, to Neal and Martha (nee Wireinus) Kangas, she had been a lifelong area resident who loved cats.
Carol was well known in the area for her crafting booths at the local fairs, festivals and markets. She was the Maple Festival director. She also was proud to be a part of Claridon Community Helps summer lunch program, where she helped make and serve more than 18,000 lunches to kids in 2020.
Carol is survived by her son, James (Susan) Tommer, of Chardon; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Sandra Kangas, of Sun City, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert Thornton; and grandson Deven Tommer.
Friends will gather at Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville (Division G, Lot 80) for a graveside service at 12 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2022, led by a close friend of the family, Cindy Hennessey.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
