GALION: Bernard Francis Martin, age 73, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020, in his Galion home.
Bernie was born August 20, 1946, in Crestline to Francis Leonard & Winnie Mae (Cook) Martin. He grew up on the family farm and was a graduate of Galion High School. He served his country as a Sergeant in the US Air Force from 1966-1970.
Over the years, Bernie worked for Ohio Brass (with his father and brother) and Peabody. For 22 years he worked for Pentair Water Ashland Operations (formerly F.E. Meyers) and retired as plant manager in 2011.
Bernie was a huge dog lover. His Newfoundland, Shadow, was walked 5x each day and received freshly cooked meals and gingersnap cookies. All the kids in the neighborhood knew him and his dog by name, and Bernie loved them all in return. He was quick to joke and loved to share a good laugh with anyone. Nature was important to Bernie and he enjoyed target practice, camping, traveling, fishing, and going to Lake Erie. In younger years, he attended all of his kid’s sporting and school events (he even coached some of the teams) and more recently he enjoyed going out to eat and every moment spent with his grandkids.
Bernie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion and the American Legion Post #342.
He is survived by his daughter Deanna Martin of Cincinnati; son Derrick Martin of Lexington; granddaughters Audrey & Delaney Martin of Mansfield; siblings William (Janie) Martin of Sulphur Springs, Francis Martin of Bucyrus, and Mary Martin of Butler; sister-in-law Emma Martin of Butler; the mother of his children Jeannine Martin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, neighbors, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his brother David Martin in 2018.
A memorial service honoring Bernie’s life will be held 1:30 pm Saturday, January 25, 2020, in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home officiated by Deacon Greg Kirk. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 to 1:30 pm and burial will occur at a future date. Military honors will be at the funeral home following the service.
