Barb Watson

Barb Watson, 85, of Bucyrus died Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at her home.

She was born in Bucyrus on June 28, 1935, to the late Lawrence and Opal (Crum) Welch. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Gus Vallas who played an active role in her life. Barb was a 1953 graduate of Bucyrus High School and on May 15, 1955, she married Russell W. Watson who preceded her in death on April 15, 2014.

Before becoming a mother and homemaker, Barb worked at the Auck Insurance Agency. After her children were grown and on their own, she took an office position at Oakwood Cemetery where she could interact with people and offer comfort through her kindness and beautiful smile. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus and a volunteer at Bucyrus Community Hospital where she touched the lives of many co-workers.

Barb was an organized and meticulous lady. Spring and Fall meant trips to Shiloh to purchase hanging baskets and mums that beautified the outside of her home. She decorated the inside of her house for various holidays and often created artificial floral arrangements to enhance the theme. Barb was an active lady who enjoyed riding her bicycle and socializing with friends and classmates on a regular basis. For the past 17 years, she faithfully exercised three times a week at the hospital rehab where she formed special bonds with staff and other regulars. Barb enjoyed preparing meals for her family. The filled noodle recipe was a favorite treat for everyone. On the rare occasion that she did relax, it was either to watch the birds at her feeder or settle down to a good book  Over the past four years, Barb enjoyed the companionship of Maddy Mae, her feline friend she picked up from the humane society.

She is survived by three children, David (Terry) Watson of Arizona, Thomas Watson of Bucyrus, and Karen Watson of Columbus; three grandchildren, Wesley Watson, Tessa Watson, and Stafford (Kari) Smith; six great-grandchildren, Avery, Ellie, Stella, Sadie, Westin, and Brody. Barb was preceded in death by her grandson, Bryan Smith. She is survived by a cousin, Claire (Ed) Tisdale of Arizona who she considered to be more like a sister.

In trying to keep everyone safe and healthy, Barb’s life will be celebrated privately, and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
