Viola was the tenth of twelve children born to Charlie and Jessie Winfree. She grew up and lived most of her life in Northwest Greensboro. She was a life-long member of Morehead United Methodist Church and told stories of what happened at Morehead when she was a little girl. She was a wealth of information about historical stories of the church and neighborhood.
Viola loved children and worked for many years at a childcare center. She loved it when those children were grown and always made it a point to stop by and visit when she would run into them. She was an outgoing person, delighting in seeing loved ones and those that she had not seen in a while. She always seemed to remember their names and little stories about them. Family and friends could count on their annual harmonica birthday greetings from Viola. Day trips and mystery excursions were great fun for Viola, who got as much fun from organizing them as participating in them.
Viola is predeceased by her husband, Ervin Smith, and children, Lisa Whicker and Charles Smith. Also predeceasing her were brothers, Lonnie, Herman (Erline), James (Hattie), and Houston (Dot) Winfree. Sisters who greeted her in heaven include Eazora (Jiggs)Cummings, Joy (Hutton) Middleton, Mattie Bell (WA) Washburn, Louise (Scott) Bailey, Carolyn (Jay) Jones, and Mary Sue (Reuben) Hawkins.
Surviving is Viola’s sister, Shirley Sharpe, her son-in-law, Vance Whicker, and many nieces and nephews.
