Dick was born in East Bend, NC, on October 10, 1920, to Brooxie Dezern Bean and Walter Raleigh Bean. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1938 where he received the Montague Award.
On June 1, 1946, Dick married the late Sarah Patterson Bean of East Bend, NC. They spent their early years in Raleigh. Following his Army Air Corps service in World War II, Dick attended North Carolina State University on the GI Bill. He received his degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1949. Dick Bean was a true fixture in the Greensboro community, heavily involved in his church, Kiwanis, and a 62-year employee of AC Corporation. There he served as chief engineer, vice president and secretary/treasurer. He still went to work until the week prior to his passing. Dick trained and mentored many in the HVAC community and taught courses in related subjects at GTI. He was a member of ASME, ASHRAE, NSPE, and a life member of PENC. He had a deep appreciation for education as noted by his establishing two scholarships at NC State and one at East Carolina University. Because he so valued his education at NCSU, he was a loyal supporter of the University, a life member of the NC State Alumni Association. His generosity extended to many individuals, organizations and numerous charities.
