February 16, 1941 – January 7, 2016
Edith N. Backofen passed peacefully into new life on Thursday January 7, 2016 following a courageous battle with breast cancer. Daughter of Gyula and Anna Fekete Baan she was born on February 16, 1941 in Budapest, Hungary. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1956.
Edie married the love of her life Richard “Dick” Backofen in November 1960 and raised their children Debra, Richard Jr., and Todd. She also worked outside the home as a caregiver, real estate salesperson and medical receptionist. Edie enjoyed cooking, good friends and family, gardening, music and the wonder of nature.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard; her son, Todd; both her parents and four siblings: Michael, Rosie, Tibor and Brigitta. Edie is survived by her children: Richard and Rose Backofen, Debra and Joseph Hansen, Maura Poiesz and Sean McGourty; brothers: Robert and Norbert Baan; grandchildren: Stephanie, Richard III and Brittany Backofen, Jeffrey, Jordan and Jonathan Hansen; great grandchildren: Landon and Ryan Backofen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 3641 State Route 52, Walker Valley, NY 12588. The Rev. Robert Hewitt will officiate.
