Alleged stabber escapes jail

An inmate charged with carjacking and assault escaped from the Laclede County Detention Center shortly after 8 p.m. Monday by posing as another inmate who was due to be released. The Laclede County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation into how the escape happened.
Steven Joe Mitchell was being held on a 1st degree robbery warrant in connection with a carjacking and knife attack at Express Stop on Millcreek Road on June 11.
Mitchell took release papers from another inmate while that inmate was waiting to be processed out of the jail, according to Sheriff David Millsap.
“The other inmate, who had returned from court, fell asleep in his cell when his name was called to the intake desk in the jail,” Millsap said in a press release.
