Lake George resident Walter H. McAllister, 83, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. His final days were spent surrounded by the family he loved so much. Walt was born on June 25, 1937 in Brainerd, MN, the son of Joseph and Ruth McAllister, who named him after his two uncles Walter Marlow and Harold McAllister. Raised in Backus, they lived in a log cabin in Hendrickson Township, eventually moving into a house on Sheridan Lake, where he went to school and graduated from Laporte Community School. Walt worked at Erickson Lumber in Hibbing, MN where he started a family and was blessed with three children. He moved his family to Inver Grove Heights while working for Texaco and Midwest Motor Express. Later, he worked for Koch Refinery and it was during this time he met Jeanette Garrett of Lake George. Walt retired from Koch, and on April 15th, 2000 he and Jeanette married and started their life together. They designed and built their home on their beloved Sheridan Lake. During their Golden Years, they gardened, tinkered, joined a bowling league and enjoyed frequent visits with friends and neighbors. Walt was a giver, always eager to lend a helping hand. His generous nature was a gift to family and friends alike. Walt volunteered regularly at Trinity Lutheran Church and The Senior Citizen’s Center in Lake George. Walt is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Bemidji, children Jody McAllister of Rochester, MN, Craig McAllister of Altamont, TN and Stacy McAllister of Eagan, MN as well as Jeanette’s children Evelyn Halvorson of Bemidji, MN and Wayne Garrett of Fargo, North Dakota, 7 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren, his sister Marian “Mickey” (Robert) Mechelke, 3 brothers – Pete (Virginia) of Lake George, MN, Twins Jerry (Peggy) Palm of Baxter, MN, and Gary (Eileen) Palm of New Brighton, MN, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruth McAllister, sister Jean Thomas, brother Daniel McAllister, 2 infant brothers and brother in law, Lee Thomas. There will be a Celebration of Life at Cease Funeral Home, 2807 Irvine Ave. NW in Bemidji on Friday September 18th from 5-8 PM and a private family service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George on Saturday September 19th. The family prefers memorials be made to The Lake George Senior Citizens Center, Trinity Lutheran Church of Lake George, Autumn Hills Assisted Living of Bemidji or the Family Suite at The Sanford Health Foundation of Northern MN (Bemidji).
