Janice Elizabeth Thompson

Janice Elizabeth Thompson, 85, passed way October 6, peacefully in her sleep at Edgewood Memory Care in Baxter, MN. She was born on September 25, 1936, to Walmer and Gladys Risberg and was raised in International Falls. She was a 1954 graduate of Falls High School and attended Bemidji State Teachers’ College where she met and married Don Thompson. Their daughter, Jill was born in Bemidji, shortly thereafter they moved to Roseau for a teaching job where Don taught 8th grade English and their son Christopher was born. They returned to Bemidji, where Don taught Physical Education and coached Track and Cross Country for many years. Jan was proud to be the wife of a teacher and was active in Faculty Wives, worked at several secretarial positions and owned a clothing store called “Jan’s”. She loved to play bridge and was a gracious hostess for many cocktail parties, dinner parties and other gatherings. She was an avid reader, wonderful pianist, writer and had a piece published in Readers Digest. She also knitted many sweaters and afghans. Jan and Don moved to the Twin Cities to be near their first grandchild who was born in 1984. They remained in the Twin Cities area until Jan moved to Baxter. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Gloria (Virgil) Reuter and Wanda (Frank) Vertnik, and husband Don. She is survived by her daughter Jill (Mark) Ness of Baxter, son Chris Thompson of Eden Prairie, grandchildren Ben Ramsland (Mound), Tom (Chelsea) Ramsland (Colorado Springs), John Ramsland  (Bradenton, FL), Andy Ness (Mpls), Nicole (Lance) Polus, Kelli Thompson, and great-grandchildren Leona, Lily, Logan, Olivia and Tyler, many nephews and nieces.Jan and Don were both donors to the U of M Anatomy Bequest Program. A joint memorial service will be held at a later date in Bemidji, MN. Many thanks to Edgewood Memory Care and St. Croix Hospice staff for their skilled and compassionate care.
