KNIGHT, James Jun 19, 1934 – Mar 21, 2021

James Robert Knight (known by most as Jim), passed away at 11:03 a.m. on March 21, 2021, surrounded by his family at his home, following a long battle with complications from injuries and related illnesses. He was born on June 19, 1934 in Kokomo, Ind., to James John and Roberta Doris (Harmon) Knight and had two younger brothers — the late Richard “Dick” Allen Knight and Robert Lee Knight (surviving) with wife Teresa Knight.
Living in Kokomo for much of his life, Jim graduated from Kokomo High School in 1952, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University in 1956. He served his country as a member of the United States Army, Specialist Four, from 1956-1959. On October 20, 1956 he wed the love of his life, Frances Constance (Banbury) Knight, and they enjoyed a long, wonderful life together, celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary in 2020.
After 36 years of contributions, he retired from Delco Electronics in 1997 where he was Manager Industrial Engineering. Before Delco Electronics, Jim worked for Haynes Stellite Works (now known as Haynes International).
Jim was an avid runner, competing in numerous organized races; his love of running was passed on to members of his family, and they ran many races together, talking and laughing along the way. He completed the Chicago Marathon three times (1988, ’89, and ’90); was a regular in the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon (1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002); he ran the Naples Half-Marathon in 2000 and 2001, and also the Virginia Beach Half-Marathon in 2002. He was a fixture at Central Indiana runs and completed countless 10K races.
He also enjoyed golf, playing locally at Chippendale Golf Course and also the Kokomo American Legion Golf Course, occasionally traveling with a foursome to play in other states around the country. Like much of the family, he followed Notre Dame University athletics, attending many games in person.
Jim was very generous with his time and was a regular volunteer at Howard Community Behavioral Health. There he served as an “elf” for the not-for-profit, tirelessly completing any and all tasks needed to help others seeking support at the facility.
Jim is survived by his wife Frances (and their Yorkshire terrier, Baxter); together the couple had three children, Leslie Ann (Knight) Kolodziejski, James Michael Knight (married to Michelle), and David Todd Knight. Jim’s grandchildren are Macy Camile Knight (with significant other Anthony England), Derek Kevin Kolodziejski and Stacia Rose Kolodziejski. Jim’s great grandchildren are Lea Devan Wilson and Aya Kai England.
Jim was a loving husband, a supportive and caring father, and a doting grandfather and great grandfather. Beneath his quiet demeanor hid a quick, friendly smile; he enjoyed a good laugh and was fond of the occasional, lighthearted prank or practical joke. He was a good and decent man, one who will be sorely and forever missed by his family and friends.
