JONES, George Mar 18, 1925 – Aug 30, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS — George Albert Jones, 96, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 30, 2021, at his new home at Traditions at North Willow. He was surrounded by family.
George was born March 18, 1925, at home in Muncie, Indiana, to his parents, William T. Jones and Helen Louise Jones (nee’ Nelson).
He was the eldest of three brothers. He attended Royerton High School.
When his nation called during World War II, George left school in May 1943 and joined the U.S. Navy. He was detailed to the Naval Armed Guard, where he served as a gunners mate on the ship Laredo Victory and other merchant ships in the South Pacific. Honorably discharged following the war, he returned to Muncie and to high school, where he graduated Royerton High School with the class of 1947.
George worked as a bellhop at the Roberts Hotel, where he met Rebecca J. Burgess, his future wife of 67 years. They were married Nov. 5, 1948.
Anyone George met was never a stranger for long. A natural people person, his career continued in sales after attending Indiana Business College. Ultimately finding his passion in car/truck/RV sales, George enjoyed serving a large customer base at several Muncie area dealerships, including Merle Lindsay and Johnny Morris Chevrolet. All the while, he balanced work, family and Christian service.
Following his retirement in 1987, he and his wife, Rebecca (Becky), continued to travel, deepen their Christian service and relish their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Moving to Delphi, Indiana, in 2004, George quickly sank roots into his new cherished community. He was an outdoorsman who loved to fish and tell his tales of trapping muskrat as a child on the banks of Muncie’s White River. He remained very active through his 96th birthday, keeping his yard and garden maintained to perfection, transporting his friends to weekly euchre games and reminiscing with friends and family.
George joined the Church of God in 1952. He worshiped with the Willard Street Church of God congregation before participating in the formation of the East 16th Street Church of God, both of Muncie. He later was a member of the Evendale Church of God in Cincinnati, the Helm Street Church of God in Logansport, and lastly, the Delphi Methodist Church in Delphi, Indiana.
George is survived by his two children, Michael Stephen Jones and Jana Lee Jones Ball (husband, Steve); his grandchildren, Joshua Jones (wife, Dana), Kathryn Ball Lanphere (husband, Andrew), Stephanie Ball Krull (husband, Timothy); and six great-grandchildren, Alexa Rebecca Jones, Daniel Jones, Van Lanphere, Beau Albert Lanphere, Elliot Krull and Cooper Krull. He is also survived by his dear nephew, Gerald Hoege (wife, Sara), of Poway, California, whom he raised for a time.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; infant daughter, Julia Ann Jones; and siblings, Robert Maxwell (Max) Jones and Ted Jones.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Dean Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.
Friends may call two hours prior to the funeral service from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
Memorial donations honoring George’s life may be directed to the Carroll County Senior and Family Services, 311 N. Washington St., Delphi, IN 46923, where he enjoyed hours of fellowship and good food with his “Delphi” family.
A special word of praise and thanks to all the healthcare workers at Traditions at North Willow and Seasons Hospice.
