Messall, Robert D
Retired Battalion Chief
Los Angeles County Fire Department
Robert Messall passed away peacefully on January 2, 2016 in Yorba Linda, CA at the age of 89. Chief Messall was known to his family and friends as Bob, or simply “Chief”.
Bob was born on March 25, 1926 near Enid, OK. When he was 14, the family moved to California and bought the Newport Beach Hotel. Bob embraced his new lifestyle and loved living at the beach. The day after graduating from Newport Beach High School he reported for a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy.
On August 1, 1949, when he was 23 years old, Bob joined the L.A.Co.F.D. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and rewards of his work, and at age 36 achieved the rank of Battalion Chief. After serving 32 years with the L.A.Co.F.D., he retired on March 31, 1981.
Bob spent his retirement years living in Fullerton, CA expanding his skills as an accomplished woodworker and designing, building and flying remote controlled airplanes. He also enjoyed watching football, cooking, and was a voracious reader.
Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl & Carl Pugh, and preceded in death by his son, Robert (Rob) Messall. Bob was very involved in his children’s lives and they were immensely proud of him. They felt that having a father who was a firefighter was like having a Super Hero in the family. Both children appreciated that their parents worked together to give them an exceptionally happy childhood.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Brown Colonial Mortuary, 204 West 17th Street, Santa Ana, CA, 92706, (714) 542-3949. Chaplain Bill Hood, retired L.A.Co.F.D. Captain, will conduct the ceremony in recognition of Chief Messall’s service with the Department.
