Linda Kay Sargent

July 28, 1941 — December 29, 2015

Linda Kay Sargent, a long time Kern County educator, passed away Dec. 29th, after suffering complications from cardiac arrest. She was surrounded by those she loved most; her daughters and beloved grandchildren.

Linda was born in Brookville, Ohio to Dorothy & Harold Walker. Growing up in Ohio, she had 3 brothers, Larry, Terry, and Jess Fogleman.

After receiving a Bachelors Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1963, she came to Bakersfield to teach physical education at South High School. She later received her Master’s Degree from UCLA.

Linda’s life work centered on educating our youth. Her passions were athletics, health, & fitness. She took great pride in directing, leading, coaching, and representing the award-winning South High School Rebelettes and Cheerleading Squads throughout her 27 years of teaching.

In 1989, she went to work at the Superintendent of Schools as the Curriculum Coordinator for Physical Education and Health. She retired in 2003, yet continued to work as a consultant for the state’s Safe Schools Planning at Risk Youth, School Law Enforcement Partnership, Anti-Bullying Programs and Crisis Response Training. Although retired, she remained a very proud board member of California School Resource Officers Association.

Linda’s greatest passions were her daughters, her grandchildren, her poodles, the beach, and Las Vegas. “The Sarge”, as she was most lovingly called by most, was always a sports fan, but when her grandchildren started participating in sports, she became an avid sports fan of all of their sports, and could often be found cheering loudly for them on the sidelines.

Linda is survived by; her two daughters, Staci McLean, son-in-law Brian and grandson Nathaniel, and Shawna Silva, son-in-law Jose and grandchildren, Brenden & Kiersten, and her brother Jess Fogleman and family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

A memorial service will be held January 15th, at 11:00 am, at St. Francis Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held immediately after, at the Woman’s Club.
