Hopkins, Luella Lena (Eggers)
October 10, 1924 – December 31, 2015
Luella Lena Hopkins – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, sister, sister-in-law, and friend, died peacefully, after some health issues, in her sleep at 91 years young. Her son Daniel was beside her, holding hand, on Thursday morning 9:30 AM, December 31, 2015. She was in the Pavilion Skilled Nursing Center in Fullerton, California. Now she is in the loving arms of her Savior, and the loving family members who preceded her in death.
Luella was born October 10, 1924 in Humbolt, Nebraska (Humbolt is in Richmond County, the southeast area of Nebraska), where she was raised on the family farm and attended school. Her favorite subject was spelling. She proved many times how her spelling helped her to excel throughout her lifetime. She worked on the family farm along with her other six siblings. Luella and her sister Adela moved to San Francisco in their young adult lives. They stayed with their Aunt Helen for a while before finding their own place. There she was to meet Verlyn Hopkins, and on December 23, 1945, they married at the Trinity Luteran Church in Santa Barbara, CA where Verlyn was stationed in the Army. After leaving the Army with an Honorable Discharge in Santa Barbara, they moved to Long Beach for a few years. In 1955 they bought their new home. She raised her four children in that home and lived there until her death.
Luella and Verlyn became charter members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Buena Park. Luella gave her time as a devoted Sunday School teacher and Verlyn was devoted in other tasks with the church.
Luella was a vital, emotional, strong anchor with unconditional love to all of her four children. Luella is survived by her devoted and loving son, Daniel; her devoted and loved daughter, Dianna (James); her daughter Evelyn; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is survived by one brother-in-law, Lee Samalson (Pauline); one sister-in-law, Wilma Darlene Eggers (Erwin); several nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors, old and new who loved her deeply.
Luella was preceded in death by her husband, Verlyn; her son, Edward; father, John Eggers; mother, Anna Marie (Henkle) Eggers; three brothers, Robert, George, Erwin; and three sisters, Halda, Adela and Pauline; and other family members.
A celebration of her 91st birthday was with Daniel, Dianna, James, and many friends and neighbors who showered her with flowers and the presents of their friendship and love.
A private celebration of her life will be held at Westminster Memorial Park where her ashes will be laid to rest beside her husband Verlyn.
