Lori Singer, 48, Sun Prairie

SUN PRAIRIE — Lori Singer, 48, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, surrounded by family and close friends, at Agrace Hospice after a two-year battle with brain cancer.

Lori was born Sept. 23, 1968, in Fort Atkinson, to Lee Braatz and Patricia Zabel.

She graduated Jefferson High School in Jefferson in 1986.

On Aug. 28, 1993, she married William (Bill) Singer, starting their journey in Littleton, Colo., then settling down in Sun Prairie to raise their three children: Grace, Madeline and Michael.

Lori worked many jobs: furniture assembly, office assistant, assistant property manager, payroll clerk and retail assistant until teaching “found her.” Lori taught 3- and 4-year-old preschool for 15 years at Sun Prairie Nursery School (SPNS).

She started as assistant teacher in 2000, then lead teacher from 2003-15. She saw her first two classes graduate Sun Prairie High School in ‘16 and ‘17.

Lori earned an associate in applied science degree in Early Childhood Education at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) earning Phi Theta Kappa in 2014 as her first step toward a bachelor of science in Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater until “life” got in the way.

Even though “life” prevented Lori from teaching and pursuing her education, she maintained a presence in the Sun Prairie School District, volunteering both at Northside Elementary School in Jennifer Connelly’s class and with Schools of Hope at C.H. Bird Elementary School in the ‘15-‘16 and ‘16-‘17 school years. Teaching was her calling and always made her smile.

Lori’s hobbies included reading, crafting, beading, visiting Colorado, and enjoying time with family, pets and friends. Nothing was more enjoyable to her than conversation over a bowl of ice cream or glass of red wine.

It appears our world lost her smile, style, charm and wit. However, her three babies keep her spirit alive.

Lori is survived by her father, Lee; mother, Patricia; sister, Tricia; brother, Mike; sister-in-law, Maura; mother-in-law, Jane; brother-in-law, Bob; sister-in-law, Rose; sister-in-law, Nancy; husband, Bill; daughter, Grace; daughter, Madeline; and son, Michael.

We’ll celebrate Lori’s life on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m. (Lori’s birthday) at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church (SPUMC), 702 North St., Sun Prairie, with lead pastor Jenny Arneson officiating.

A reception will follow.

SPUMC also is home of the play-based, parent co-operative pre-school, Sun Prairie Nursery School (SPNS) where Lori taught for 15 years.
