Berniece Emma Johnston

Berniece Johnston, 84, formerly of Milton, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at the home of her daughter, Sally Mertz, in Watertown.

Berniece was born Oct. 21,1932, in Woodstock, Illinois, the daughter of Reinhold and Anna (Rutz) Wille. She was married to Lynn Topel Sr. on Dec. 9, 1952. Lynn died Sept. 13, 1976. She later married George Johnston on March 31, 1979. He died June 27, 2016. She worked at Schweiger Industries, Jefferson. She later went to work at Crystal Etch in Janesville. She moved to Milton 37 years ago coming from Lake Mills. She was a member of the Moose Club in Mount Morris, Illinois. She enjoyed car racing, especially the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR and sprint cars. She enjoyed traveling the country. She loved playing the slot machines, watching birds and was an avid Chicago Bear fan.

She is survived by five children, Jerry (Debby) Topel of Milford, Lynn (Sue) Topel of Jefferson, Cindy (Richard) Heiden of Watertown, Sally (Darrell) Mertz of Watertown and Dan (Mary) Topel of Mount Morris; a stepdaughter, Wendy (Gordon) Swiggum of Janesville; 16 grandchildren, James Topel, Joe Topel, Rebecca Koning, Tamara Orzech, Jennifer Uhlman, Christopher Topel, David Mertz, Brian Mertz, Kendra Hoffman, Cody Heiden, Kayla Topel, Taylor Topel, Tucker Topel, Dylan Green, Morgan Green and Joe Johnston; 31 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alwin (Agnes) Wille of Poplar Grove, Illinois; and sister, Ruth Hoel of Pasco, Washington, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; four children in infancy, James, Judy, Dale and Cynthia; six brothers, August, Edward, Otto, Arnold, Eric and Walter; and three sisters, Anna, Irmgard and Olga.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Albrecht Funeral Home in Milton with the Rev. Kurt Liebenow officiating. Burial will be at Aztalan-Milford Cemetery in Lake Mills. Visitation time will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Rainbow Hospice.
