Zane was born February 14, 1952 in Houston, Texas to Robert and Mary Webb (Moser). Always an athlete, Zane grew up with a strong work ethic and desire to excel, as well as an innate ability to “fix” things. Zane served proudly in the Army from 1972 to 1975 where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. While stationed in Jackson, Mississippi, he met and married his wife of 40 years, Carolyn Shaw Webb. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1982.

Zane began his career with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) in September 1982, working in Athens, Jacksonville, Waco and Austin. In 1998, he was appointed Director of the Maintenance Division in Austin where he was responsible for the maintenance of, and statewide emergency operations for, Federal and State highways throughout Texas until he retired in 2009. Zane was recognized both nationally and internationally for his expertise and leadership. Very active in national organizations, Zane participated in international scanning tours in Australia, South Africa, and France. He loved working with his TXDOT family to serve the citizens of Texas. He also took great pride in seeing both his children attend UT and follow in his footsteps as engineers with TXDOT. After retiring from TXDOT, Zane became the Western US Regional Manager for HDR.

In 2013, Zane and Carolyn moved to the family farm in Whitehouse. He took great pleasure in being closer to family and friends. Whether teaching his grandsons to repair a carburetor or outwitting feral hogs, Zane enjoyed country life.
