Cecelia Sunshine Mann

Cecelia Sunshine Mann was born February 11, 1928, in Estelline, Texas, the daughter of a Methodist preacher. After receiving degrees from Southern Methodist University and Scarritt College, she married a Methodist preacher, Dan Bynum. Together they raised a family (including a Methodist preacher) as they served churches throughout East Texas. She was an educator in all she did, teaching kindergartners, second graders, elementary readers, Junior High English students, and always her own children. Sunshine loved music—singing and playing the piano, sewing, gardening, and her dogs. She passed away very peacefully January 7, 2016.

Sunshine is preceded in death by her husband, Dan, and her brother, Jim. She is survived by her children, Dan and his wife Cynthia, Chris, James and his wife Kate, Cecelia and her husband Pete Smith, and Jonathan and his wife Lea. She is also survived by and her sisters, Dorothy and Nan. She has eight grandchildren—Jesse, Julia, Matt, Erin, Joshua, Susanna, Luke, and Samuel—and two great-grandchildren—Valerie and Annakate.

Following a private burial at Moorehead-Melton Cemetery, a celebration of Sunshine’s life will be held at Athens First United Methodist Church Saturday, January 9, at 2:00 p.m. Any memorials in her honor may be sent to Athens First United Methodist Church.
