Aurora Garza Porter

Dr. Richard Kleiman and Rev. Dr. Jim Gill officiating.

Aurora Garza Porter, 93, of Highlands was born May 2, 1924, in Chapman Ranch, TX to the late Francisco and Manuela Garza of San Benito, TX and was the oldest of seven siblings. She joined our Heavenly Father on Friday, September 15, 2017.

Aurora had a full and active life and shared her gifts and talents in all that she did for her family and for others. During WWII she was a quality control inspector, inspecting the wiring installation of the instruments in the cockpit of B-24 bombers in Fort Worth, Texas. In the 1970’s she directed and taught 14 years at “Los Amigos” school, a neighborhood mission for St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Baytown. In the 1980’s she was the activities/craft director at Mountbatten House of Highlands. In earlier years she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, she also taught citizenship classes with American Red Cross, was an active member in her church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In 1998, she was selected as one of Baytown’s Fifty Outstanding Hispanic Leaders. She was creative and artistic and could make something out of nothing. She taught herself how to crotchet, she was an exceptional seamstress and cook. Among the many things she enjoyed was listening to music, gardening and bird watching.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, the love of her life, Raymond Porter. She is survived by her son, Raymond Porter Jr., Edward Porter, and her daughter Cynthia Oliphant. Her grandchildren include Stacy Bell, Ray Porter III, Jonathan Porter, Aaron Lington, Peter Lington, and Chip Oliphant. Her great-grandchildren include Jordan Kenerly, Christian Kenerly, Avery Lington, Anthony Lington, Leyton Bodi-Lington, Ella Lington, Cade Lington and Dax Oliphant. She is survived by one of her brothers and four sisters, numerous nieces and nephews.
