Jerry D.”PaPaw” Thompson Jerry D. “Papaw” Thompson ,79, of Damascus, Virginia passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017, at his residence in Damascus, Virginia. He was born in Washington County, Virginia on November 19, 1937, a son of the late Raymond Thompson and Maude Venable Beverly and his stepfather, June Beverly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Thompson and wife, Jane and Ted Thompson and wife, Elaine: one sister, Betty Blackburn and husband, Jack: four brothers-in-law, Rance Dunn, Isaac McCracken, Luther Miller and Wilton Neely: two sisters-in-law, Eileen Dunn Stewart and Catherine Dunn Vannoy and husband, John. Papaw was a life long resident of Washington County, Virginia. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. He worked with American Cyanamid Corporation for many years. He was an avid fisherman. He had a great respect and love for nature. Throughout his life he fished most streams and lakes in and around Damascus. As a very patient teacher, he taught many in the family the tricks of the trade. Papaw is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Juanita Thompson; one daughter, Michelle Stiltner and husband, Dave of Abingdon, Va.; one son, Larry Thompson and wife, Millie of Damascus, Va.; two grandsons, Jacob Heath and girlfriend, Jesse Reavis and Justin Thompson and wife, Kat; one granddaughter, Kristen Watson and husband, Travis; two great-grand daughters, Mia Thompson and Layla Watson; one step grandson, Andrew Stiltner and wife, Ashley; three brothers-in-law, Harold Dunn and wife, Mary, Edd Dunn and wife, Irma, and Roland Dunn and wife, Marty; three sisters-in-law, Dixie McCracken, Teen Buckley, and Wilma Miller; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, Virginia with Pastor David Griffin officiating. Pallbearers will be Jacob Heath, Jack Stewart, Dave Stiltner, Logan Riendeau, Roy Summey, and Hunter Price. Honorary pallbearers Harold Dunn, Edd Dunn, Roland Dunn, and Stoney Stewart. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to Penny F. Garrett Sarcoma Foundation, P.O. Box 832 Damascus, Virginia. The family wants to express a special “Thank You” to Nicki Crossman, Sharon Lester and Nick May of Mountain States Homecare & Hospice for the special care provided to Papaw and to special caregivers, Teena Price, Hunter Price, Roy Summey, Jacob Heath and Jesse Reavis.
