The Reverend Monsignor Samuel E. Shoemaker, Pastor, Saint Ignatius of Antioch Parish, Yardley, Pa. died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016.
Monsignor Shoemaker was born on Sept. 22, 1940 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was the son of the late Samuel H. Shoemaker and the late Frances B. (Kolek) Shoemaker.
Monsignor Shoemaker attended Saint Bartholomew Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Saint Joseph’s Preparatory High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Shoemaker was ordained on May 21, 1966, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John J. Krol and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on April 28, 1982. Monsignor Shoemaker served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Gabriel Parish, Philadelphia; Saint John Bosco Parish, Hatboro; and Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Norristown. He also served as a student priest at the Catholic University of America. Monsignor Shoemaker served in the Chancery office from 1976 through 1989 as Assistant Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Chancellor. Monsignor Shoemaker was appointed Pastor at Saint Ignatius Parish, Yardley, in February 1989.
Monsignor Shoemaker is survived by his cousins, Karen Shoemaker-Turbyfill and Stephen Turbyfill, Pat and Pete Worrall, and Fred Vopper.
The Reception of the Body will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31 at Saint Ignatius Church, Yardley, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m. with a viewing following the Mass until 9 p.m. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a funeral Mass for Monsignor Shoemaker at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1 at Saint Ignatius Church, where an additional viewing will be held beginning at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Concelebrating the funeral Mass will be Reverend Leo Stajkowski and Reverend Charles Zlock. Father Leo Stajkowski, Diocese of Allentown, will be the homilist. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Msgr. Samuel E. Shoemaker to the Father McCafferty Scholarship Fund to benefit St. Ignatius School or to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary to benefit seminarians.FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home,
