Carlton Frank Sparks, 85, of Marion, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, at Sunnyside Retirement Home in Forest City with his loving family by his side.
Mr. Sparks was born in McDowell County, March 17, 1932, to the late Kenneth Garland Sparks and Erma Hall Sparks. He served his country proudly in the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a Sergeant and earned the Purple Heart medal. He was also a very proud lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His favorite pastime was reading about guns and their history and gun collecting. He was an outdoorsman and he loved to go hunting. Mr. Sparks worked at several different places during his lifetime. He worked at Ethan Allen, Old Fort Finishing, Department Of Corrections, and Blue Ridge Security before he retired. Mr. Sparks was a loving husband to his wife for 64 years, Ida Mae, and a great dad to his sons. He adored his grandchildren and especially loved being their “Papaw”.
Surviving Mr. Sparks are his wife, Ida Mae Davis Sparks of Marion; sons, Roy (Dora) Sparks of Old Fort and Wayne Sparks of Marion; a brother, Garland Eugene Sparks, of Huntsville, Ala.; granddaughters, Sherry (Junior) McIntosh of Marion and Kendall Sparks of New York, N.Y.; great- grandchildren, Savannah Chenault, Hunter McIntosh, Addison McIntosh, and Heidi McIntosh, all of Marion.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 18, at Story Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marion, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Matt Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at McDowell Memorial Park.
