Iris Davis Luquire, 78, formerly of Biscoe, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Care and Wellness Center of Whitestone Masonic and Eastern Star Home following several years of declining health.
Iris was born in Richmond County, April 14, 1939 to the late Ruby Hardister Russell. She grew up in Troy and was raised by her mother, Ruby Hardister Russell and step-father, the late Elwood Russell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Charles Glenn Luquire.
After graduating from Troy High School in 1957, Iris attended and graduated from Charlotte Memorial Hospitals School of Radiologic Technology in Charlotte. She began her career serving those in need by becoming the only X-Ray technologist in Montgomery County from 1958-1969, at which time she stopped working to become a caregiver and a mother.
She was a member of Uwharrie United Methodist Church in Troy, and also a member of the Royal Order of the Eastern Star Gibsonville Chapter #108.
Iris cherished her family and strived to always put the needs of others above her own. She was a phenomenal cook, an avid gardener a devoted wife, mother and granny. She loved spending time at her mountain home on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She was loved by all who knew her.
After being diagnosed with the rare brain disorder PPA (Primary Progressive Aphasia) 9 years ago, Iris made the decision to donate her brain to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Research Center, Duke University, in an effort to help others even after her death.
Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Holly Luquire Fischer (Jim) of Kernersville; granddaughter, Kaelyn Simmons (David) of Burlington, Kyndall Hill of Kernersville; great-granddaughters Kennedy Young and Maddilyn Simmons of Burlington; brother, John W. Davis; and sister Stephanie Shahan (Chris). Also left to cherish her memory is her loyal and loving caregiver Deborah Smith of Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. Thursday, September 28 at Uwharrie United Methodist Church, 1182 NC Hwy. 109, Troy. Funeral service will follow, with the Reverend Glen Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
