Peter John Macris

SUFFIELD, Conn. — Peter John Macris, 84, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, in his home in Suffield, Connecticut.

He was born in Buffalo on Oct. 6, 1931, to John and Panagiota Macris, the youngest of nine children.

A graduate of Buffalo State College, Middlebury College and New York University, he was a professor of German language and literature at SUNY Oneonta and served many years as chair of the department of foreign languages.

Peter had a lifelong love for theater and music. When he was drafted into the Army and sent to Germany as a young man he used that time to visit many European opera houses, and later in his life he dreamed of starting a new opera company in upstate New York. With the help of many enthusiastic supporters a little company was born, which is today the renowned Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown.

He was also very much involved in cultural projects in Oneonta, where he lived for more than four decades. He founded Orpheus Theatre and spearheaded the creation and construction of the Foothills Performing Arts Center.

Peter also served on several boards and was a member and past president of the Oneonta Rotary Club. He continued his membership in the Suffield Rotary Club after moving to Connecticut in 2008.

Peter derived his greatest pleasure when surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by Ursula, his wife of 52 years; his devoted children, Harry of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sabine of South Windsor, Connecticut and John of Harpenden, England; daughters-in law, Ruth and Michelle; and his beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Ben, Ellie, Marlena, Caroline, Zoe, Peter and Sophia.

The family is planning a memorial service for 12 p.m., April 2, at First Church of Christ, Congregational, 81 High St., Suffield, Connecticut. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
