Marian Scudder

MARGARETVILLE — Marian A. Scudder, 95, of Orchard Street, Margaretville, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, where she had resided for the past three years. 

She was born in Shavertown on Sept. 6, 1920, the daughter of Ward F. and Lelah (Bryden) Shaver and attended school in Shavertown, graduating from the Andes Central School in 1938 at the head of her class. She attended Albany State University.

Marian married James Bruce Armstrong in Shavertown in 1943 and together with her husband and his mother, managed Armstrong’s Feed and General Store in Shavertown until forced from the valley in 1953 by the construction of the Pepacton Reservoir. They purchased a home on Orchard Street in Margaretville, where she resided until recently.

Mr. Armstrong predeceased her in 1966. She married Charles Carson Scudder in 1969. Together they traveled the United States and Canada in their motor home and wintered in Florida for 18 years. He died in 1994. 

Marian had been employed for many years by the Catskill Mountain News.

She was an elder and had been a longtime Sunday School teacher and choir member in the Margaretville Presbyterian Church and member of the Downsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Marian served on the Middletown Town Board and had been a member of the Delaware County Republican Committee. 

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by a sister, Theresa S. Lakin. 

Survivors include her cousins, Fred and Jean Bryden, Dorothy Andrews, James Andrews, John Andrews, Donna Sanford; a stepdaughter-in-law, Jan Rumrill and stepgrandchildren, Jill Harper, Brett Scudder, Scott Flowers, Allison Clary and Amy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Marena Vittorio officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at the funeral home.

A committal service will take place in the Andes Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marian’s name may be made to the Margaretville-New Kingston Presbyterian Church or the recreation fund at the Mountainside Residential Care Facility, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
