Fortune Louise Burkoski of Newburgh entered into rest on January 8, 2016. She was 93.

Daughter of the late Felice “Philip” and Angelina “Lena” DeCandia, she was born May 2, 1922 in Fort Montgomery, NY. She married the late John “Lefty” Burkoski on February 25, 1945.

Fortune worked in retail sales at the Hilda Shop, Travers, and Jarron’s in Newburgh, and was a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital for more than 20 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart League, and Catholic Daughters of America, Court Patricia. Fortune was a tireless volunteer and fundraiser for these organizations.

She is survived by her sisters: Frances Carfora and husband, Thomas of Del Ray Beach, FL, Lee Fratto and husband, John of Chester, and Barbara Colello and husband, Michael of Las Vegas; sister-in-law, Carol DeCandia of Latham, NY; and brother-in-law, Michael “Micky” Burkoski of Newburgh; and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Carbo, and brothers: Marvin and Philip DeCandia.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 11th at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 12th in Sacred Heart Church, with entombment following in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh.
