Sgt. Rufus LaVaughn Banks III, 64, Transitioned to be with the Lord on Monday at Upstate Medical University Hospital. Born to Lillie Mae Davis and Rufus LaVaughn Banks Jr., he graduated from the University at Albany. Rufus served more than 26 years with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, where he received a Medal of Distinction in 1999 and a promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 2002. He retired in 2007. Rufus was a member of River of Life Church in Syracuse. He is survived by his former wife of 29 years, Dicel (Torrence) Banks; his children, Rufus Shakara. (Clarisse) Banks of Albany, and LaVaughn, Lauren, Sharikee and Shawnee, all of Syracuse; granddaughters Amya Graves, Nia and Cadence Banks, and Rayne Banks; his sisters, Janice Jenkins of Syracuse, Carolyn (Irv) Gilliam of Sarasota, Fla. and Paulette (Frank) Williams of St. Petersburg, FL.; and host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Helen Banks. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at River of Life Church, 753 James St. with a service to follow at Noon.
