Ethel M. Strauss

Ethel Marie Strauss of Salisbury, MD, formerly of Elkton, MD, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, September 13, 2017. She was 86 and passed peacefully in her sleep after a long illness. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, to Elsie and James Young in 1931.

Mrs. Strauss was a devout Lutheran whose faith kept her smiling throughout the days leading to her passing. She was a devoted wife, perfect mother and delighted in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved animals and doted on her beloved cat Uszapki. She loved the theatre, classical and show music, dining and visiting friends and family.

Mrs. Strauss loved to travel and made many trips abroad and in the states with her friends, sorority sisters and family. She worked at Friendly Pharmacy, Sun Pharmacy and Elkton Pharmacy for many years. She loved the work and the chance to meet so many great people and retired in her 70’s. Mrs. Strauss never knew a stranger and brought out the best in everyone she met. She saw the good in everyone. Her pet project was knitting helmet liners for active duty soldiers and knitting gifts for her family and many friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Strauss was preceded in death by her husband, James Strauss, Sr., a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War; and her sister, Elaine.

She is survived by her daughter, Ethel M. “Giddi” Taylor and her husband, Joseph Taylor; two sons, James Strauss and his wife, Kimberly G. Payne, and David W. Strauss and his husband, Roy England. Also her grandchildren, Ryan and Benjamin Taylor and Andrew Strauss; great grandchildren, McKenna, Delaney, Zachary and Nathaniel Taylor; and godchildren, Rod, Tom and Carl Messenger, Ruth Matern and Jamie Justice.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2017, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD, where visitation will begin at 12 Noon. Interment in Elkton Cemetery will be private.
