Walter O. “Sonny” Ward Jr., 82 , formerly of Waynetown, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 24, 2017, surrounded by his family while a resident of Williamsburg Nursing Home, Crawfordsville.
Sonny was born Dec. 5, 1934, at Paris, Illinois, the son of Walter Sr. and Edith (nee: Franklin) Ward. Sonny grew up in Waynetown and attended school there after his mother had passed away when he was 5. A hard working man he worked for more than 35 years for Tru-Lay Block at Waynetown and after it closed he worked for a janitorial company at RR Donnelley and Sons, then Crawfordsville Vault Company and the Myers Dinner Theater. From his early teen years he mowed yards for local families, he loved to garden, hunt mushrooms and was an avid fisherman teaching his children how to fish. In his later life he became a member of the Waynetown Christian Church.
Sonny will be greatly missed by his wife, Nettie (Richey) Ward, whom he married Feb. 4, 1956, at Indianapolis. She now resides at Williamsburg Nursing Home, Crawfordsville.
He is also survived by son David Ward of Williamsport; daughter Bonnie (Scott) Harris of Waynetown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and his daughter-in-law Ginny Ward.
Funeral services for Sonny will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 Bratton Road, Waynetown, and officiated by his family and friends. Burial will follow in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
