John R. “Jack” Dean, 80, Kokomo, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, at his home. He was born June 8, 1938, in Noblesville, to John Lester and Katherine Luella (Rogers) Dean. On Dec. 24, 1958, he married Judith Anola Wewe, in Carmel, and she survives.
Jack graduated from Carmel High School in 1956 and from Manchester College in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in education. He went on to earn his master's degree in education from Butler University. Jack was a teacher and coach at Pike High School, Carmel High School and Northwestern High School, where he served as head football coach. He started his insurance career in the early 1970s and purchased Rayls Insurance Co. in 1981 He owned and operated it until his retirement in 2017.
Jack was a member of the Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church and a former member of the Courtland Avenue Friends Church, where he served as a youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. He also served as a BSA scout master, leading eight of his Scouts to become Eagle Scouts. He served as president of the Northwestern School Board. He managed the Kokomo Swim Club while he was teaching and coached the Kokomo Chiefs semi-pro football team. He was an active parent in his children's band, choir, and athletic events. He loved music, especially gospel music, sang in the Transformers Quartet at Courtland and played the organ. He enjoyed playing golf and wintering in Naples, Florida, and he cherished spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's activities.
In addition to his wife, Judy Dean, he is survived by his children, John (Brenda) Dean, Jennifer (Brad) Priday and Jeff (Meredith) Dean; grandchildren, Aaron (Becky) Dean, Caleb (Amber) Dean, Eli (Angela) Dean, Rachel (Jake) Dean, Isaac Dean, Kayla (fiancé Christopher Weiper) Priday, Kelsey (Blake) Donson, Kennedy Priday, Grace Dean and Bridget Dean; great-grandchildren, Gia Montgomery, Autumn Dean, Evie Marchese and Lilly Donson; sister, Mary Lou Imes; sister-in-law, Sherrie Benson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Dean.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Peggy Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
