Viola Hyatt

1930 – 2017

Viola Mae “Vi” Hyatt, 87, of Pekin, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, at UnityPoint Health Pekin.

Born Jan. 1, 1930, in Lowden, Iowa to Emil and Luella (Boehl) Gehrls, she married Willis Gordon Hyatt on June 20, 1948, in Pekin. He died May 19, 2005, in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Tamara Sayles.

Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Willis “Bud”) Moore of Pekin; one son, Lindsey (Valari) Hyatt of Pekin; son-in-law, Larry Sayles of Pekin; six grandchildren, Kevin Moore, Clint Moore, Katrina (Chris) Gee, and Kelly Hyatt, all of Pekin, Jason (Yvette) Moore of Discovery Bay, CA, and Kimberlee (Marty) Watson of South Pekin; 11 great-grandchildren, Arianna Moore, Kahlif Moore, Lindsay Watson, Ava Gee, Madelynn Gee, Regina Carter, Tamieka Dawson, Chloe Gee, Kiera Moore, Austin Moore, and Alaina Moore; and one sister, Marcella Nesseim of Bedford, Texas.

Vi had worked for Pekin Community High School in the East Campus facility cafeteria for 15 years, retiring in 1978. She later worked for Canteen at Caterpillar in Mapleton for several years. She was a devoted member of Normandale Reformed Church and the NRC Women. Vi enjoyed gardening and was a great cook. Her greatest joy was being with her family, church family and friends.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Normandale Reformed Church in Pekin. The Rev. David Craig will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Normandale Reformed Church, 2001 S. 2nd St., Pekin.
