Thomas P. Burkhart, 71, of Peru died at 3:09 p.m. Jan. 15, 2016, in Morris Hospital.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Celebration of Life will be 9-11 a.m. Tuesday in Hurst Funeral Home, La Salle.
Mr. Burkhart was born Dec. 5, 1944, in Riverside, Calif., to Robert and Gretchen (Miller) Burkhart. Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and began working for Crawford and Co. in 1968. After working as an insurance adjuster for 32 years, Tom retired in 2000.
Tom continued his education at Illinois Valley Community College, earning a degree in computer science. He then worked at the YMCA for five years before retiring a second time. Tom was a member of La Salle-Peru Elks Lodge, where he served as Exalted Ruler. He was very active in the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, hiking and exploring the trails at Starved Rock State Park. He loved talking and visiting with everyone.
Mr. Burkhart is survived by his wife of 47 years Jean Burkhart of Peru; two daughters Maria Burkhart of Carlock and Amy (Chad) Rebmann of Maple Valley, Wash.; six grandchildren Christina (Morgan) Glassco, Jessica Andes, Johnathan Andes, Nathan Horn, Gabriel Rebmann and Elizabeth Horn; one great-grandchild, Mikel Phillips; and nine brothers and sisters, Jim, Carol, David, Phillip, Julie, Marilyn, Mike, Pat and Greg.
