Lavonne Dawson

1942 – 2017

Lavonne M. Dawson, 75, of Manito, passed away at 9:03 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, at Unity Point Health – Pekin. She was born on July 20, 1942, in Manito, the daughter of Robert and Arlene (Himmel) Maas. She married Virgil Dawson on Dec. 29, 1961, at the Forest City Community Church in Forest City. He survives.

Lavonne is also survived by two daughters, Patia (Kelly) Picken and Julie (Josh) Cackowski, both of Manito; and three grandchildren, Chase Picken, Camryn Picken and Jake Cackowski.

Lavonne was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gary Maas.

Lavonne was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Manito. She initiated Project Kids for school supplies for Midwest Central School kids in 2003, did advocacy work in Manito and Pekin, and loved to play solitaire on the computer. For 38 years, Lavonne was a special education teacher in Pekin Public Schools including Willow, Sunset and Broadmoor schools. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and quilter.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held for Lavonneat 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, at Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito. Rev. Greg Boylan will officiate. Memorials may be made to Project Kids.
