Catherine E. Scherzer

Catherine E. Scherzer, 91, of Pana, died Friday, January 8, 2016 in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. She was born November 19, 1924 in Pana Hospital, to the late Florian & Pauline (Miklautsch) Scherzer.
Catherine graduated from Pana High School in 1942. She then entered St. John’s School of Nursing immediately after high school, graduating in 1945. Born in Pana, she had lived in Springfield while she was working, but came to Pana on weekends and returned to Pana when she retired. She was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Pana; CCW; Red Hat Society; Pana Community Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a volunteer in the gift shop. She worked as a registered nurse at St. John’s Hospital, caring for premature babies from 1942-1987. When she retired, she was a nurse administrator over the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Catherine received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award from St. John’s Hospital at a special ceremony honoring her for 42 years of caring for tiny babies. In 2005, a special plaque honoring her was unveiled outside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She also was honored by Mayor Timothy J. Davlin, Mayor of Springfield, proclaiming May 11 was Kate Scherzer Day. In 2001, she was named to the Pana High School Wall of Fame.
She is survived by her nieces & nephews: Billy Graham, Michael Graham, Susan Stewart, Paula Jenkins, Margie Goodrich, Maria Groves, Stephen Clavin, Edward Clavin, Matthew Clavin, Penny Shehadeh, Mary Fleigle, Sally Geyston-Leonard, Pete Scherzer, John Scherzer, Carolyn O’Connell, Allison Parker, and Andrea Cordes; several great nieces & nephews, and great-great nieces & nephews; and sister-in-law: Margaret Scherzer, Springfield, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Andrew, Florian, and John Scherzer; sisters: Carolyn Graham, Monica Clavin, & Maryanne O’Connell.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until service time in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Pana.
Funeral mass will be Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Rodney A. Schwartz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pana.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School and Council of Catholic Women.
