Evelyn Virginia Stokes, 81, of Monroe, died on Sept. 10, 2017.
She was born on April 20, 1936, in Macon to the late Annie Louise Collins Brown and the late Homer Erwin Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Hugh Stanley Stokes.
She is survived by her daughters and son in law, Teresa Stokes, of Atlanta, Denise Stokes of Atlanta, Lenore and Frank Mickle, of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Dr. Charlton Payne, of Berlin, Germany, Alexis Torres, of San Francisco, California, and Jessika and Adam Brannon, of Hiram; brothers and sisters, Kathryn Wehunt, of Macon, Richard (Janice) Brown, of Macon, Georgia Brown, of Marietta, Bobby (Nancy) Brown, of Milledgeville, Frank (Cynthia) Brown, of Centerville; brothers in law, Ralph Stokes, of Macon, and Charles (Barbre) Stokes, of Katy, Texas; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Virginia graduated from Miller High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Georgia College, and master’s degree from Georgia State University. She taught in DeKalb County 24 years, and Henry County 3 years.
She traveled extensively throughout Europe. She sang with the Decatur Civic Chorus, then later with the choir of Monroe First United Methodist Church where she was member, lay minister, and treasurer. One of her greatest joys was teaching and training in the Methodist church’s Disciple program. She was a certified master gardener with a passion for growing various botanicals, an extraordinary cook, an avid cruciverbalist, dedicated teacher, and deeply loyal wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at Meadows Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Monroe First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Dane Wagner officiating. Interment will follow at Macon Memorial Park at 4 p.m.
