Lee Roy “Buddy” Chesnut, Jr., aged 68, passed away on January 10, 2016. He was born to L.R. Chesnut and Willie Dee Martin Chesnut March 3, 1947. Buddy had suffered from the effects of a stroke since July, 2015.
Buddy graduated from Vernon High School in 1965, where he played football, baseball, basketball and track. He also graduated from Chipola Junior College and the University of West Florida at Pensacola. He majored in Physical Education and was certified to teach Science.
After teaching physical education at Crestview, and science at Roulhac Middle School in Chipley, he became owner and operator of Farm and Garden Center in Bonifay. He spent 39 years in this position. This store had been previously owned by his father-in-law, Louis K. Hutchinson.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his son Roy Tyler Chesnut, sister, Phala Newsom and nephew Frankie Chesnut.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Margaret Chesnut, a son Kyle Chesnut and wife Mia, four grandchildren Preston, Lauren, Ethan and Camden Chesnut, a brother F.D. “Sonny” Chesnut, brother-in-law Joe Frank Newsom, sister-in-law Grace Chesnut, one nephew Kelly Newsom and wife Cheryl, one niece Delanie Pritchard and husband Ross, and one great-niece Meredith Pritchard, and one great-nephew Sonny Lee Chesnut.
Visitation is planned for Wednesday, January 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Bonifay. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist, with burial to follow at Poplar Head Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Peel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
