Cardell, Mary Francis

CARDELL Mary Francis Cardell, 77, died June 6, 2016. She was born Aug 19, 1938 in Louisville, KY and grew up in Volusia County, FL where she graduated from Mainland High School. After graduation from Western Carolina University in 1961 she began teaching first grade in Jacksonville. Mary later became a school librarian and became a librarian for the City of Jacksonville where she stayed for thirty years, having earned a Master’s degree at FSU. She loved music, art, nature and travel. She was soft spoken but cared deeply about social issues. Mary has played the bells at St John’s Episcopal Cathedral and has sung in several choirs. She was a member of the Sierra Club, St Andrews Society,the Duval Co. Democratic Executive Committee, the Recycles, Jacksonville Historical Society, Friday Musicale Chorus, and was active in the inter-faith ICARE. She is survived by her husband of 50 yrs, Dick Cardell, and three first cousins, Dr. David Haupt of Cedar Rapids, IA; Harry Haupt of Oskaloosa, IA and Marion O. Francis of Pagosa Springs, CO. A memorial service will be held at Arlington Congregational Church UCC on Sunday, Jan 24 at 2 pm. Her ashes will be interred at St John’s Episcopal Cathedral at a later date.
