On the evening of January 4th, 2016 Rich passed away after an 8-week battle with cancer. Rich was surrounded by those who loved him. Rich was born in Watsonville to Olga Castro and Franz Baum on October 31, 1967. He was the last child in the family with 6 older brothers and 1 older sister. Rich enjoyed life! He loved being a Father, Friend and competitor! He loved playing baseball, thrived at it during his high school years, and later enjoyed coaching. Rich made many long lasting and loving friendships during his high school and adulthood years.
While trying to save his money for his High School prom, he began to work at Pajaro Valley Fresh Fruit & Veg. which is where he spent the next 26 years in sales. He thrived in the Ag business and worked for several different companies ending his career with Atlantic Fresh Trading Company.
Rich found joy in cooking for those he loved. He was an avid A’s and Raiders fan and a lover to all. He was generous and would gladly give to those around him whenever he had the chance. Rich was an incredible father and loved his children more than anything in the world.
Rich was diagnosed with cancer on November 4th. When finding out he had less than 6 months to live, his final wishes were to go to Lake Tahoe as well as stay in a beach home with his children and his girlfriend, Michelle. He was fortunately able to fulfill both of those wishes with the help of friends and family.
Rich was preceded in death by his Mom, Olga Castro and 2 oldest brothers, Dennis and Frank. He is survived by his 3 children, Olivia, 19, Jordan, 16 and Hudson, 3, his brothers and their wives, Carl, Stan and Paula, Eric and Tracey and Dave and Claire, his sister, Arlene, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel was trusted with cremation arrangements.
A memorial service will be held on Jan 15th at Our Lady Help of Christians at noon with a celebration of his life immediately following at The Watsonville Elks Lodge.
