William “Bill” Armstrong was born on July 19, 1937 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and died December 28, 2015 at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara, California. Bill was a graduate of Mt. Diablo High School, Class of 1956. He married his first wife Sidney Sue in 1959. Bill joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Morro Bay, California and later at Yerba Buena Island near San Francisco. Following his Honorable Discharge, Bill received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.
Bill became a Contra Costa County Deputy Sheriff where he served for thirteen years. He and his wife Sidney Sue, with their oldest son Rusty, moved to a farm in Scotts Mills, Oregon where Bill became a city police officer and a rancher. After a few years and two more children, he changed jobs and worked for Boise Cascade for over ten years. Missing his childhood home, he and his second wife Susie moved to Concord, where he worked for USS-POSCO Industries, retiring after twenty years.
Bill enjoyed being a Little League Coach in Concord and Silverton, Oregon. One of his greatest pleasures, outside of his family, was his membership in The Improved Order of Redmen. Bill was a member of the local Wahoo Tribe #194 for over fifty years and went onto become the Great Sachem (State President) in 1996. In 2002-2004, Bill achieved the highest rank of the Order, serving as the Great Incohnee (National President). The improved Order of Redmen is the oldest fraternal organization originating in the United States. He enjoyed crisscrossing this great country; gaining friendships he would cherish his entire life.
Bill is survived by his children, Rusty, Scott (Laura), and Sidney Armstrong, grandchildren, Cristina, Sabrina, Nicholas, Sarah, Lisa, Sidney, Madelyn, and Tiffany, 5 great-grandchildren and his former daughter-in-law Maria. He is also survived by his brothers Jack (Janet), and Rick (Sue) and sisters Madeleva and Marelyn, as well as, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill is predeceased by parents Francis and Madelyn Armstrong, brothers Russ, George, Larry, Darwin, Mark and sister Betty Jane.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 13, 2016 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm with Redmen Services at 7pm at Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel, 4125 Clayton Road, Concord, CA 94521. Funeral Liturgy will be Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 10:30am at Queen of All Saints Church, 2390 Grant Street, Concord, CA 94520. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Lafayette.
