Joyce Marie Ammons (Hammonds) was born on December 20, 1941 to David Lee & Ruth Lee Hammonds in San Antonio, TX. Surrounded by family and friends, Joyce passed peacefully at home on January 4th after a long struggle with cancer.
Survived by her husband of 54 years Forrest W. Ammons, Jr.; children: Ty and Michelle; grand-children: Stephen, Rebecca and Mikayla; great-grand-children: Jae’Lynn, Keilani, Janessa, Cataleya, Stephen Jr. and Janelle; siblings: Paul and Patricia; daughter-in-law: Edna; sons-in-law: Leonard and Nathan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She began her career with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department in 1974 and became the First African-American woman to retire from the department in 1999.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20th at Fouche’s Hudson Funeral Home, 3665 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, CA 94609-2426.
