BISBEE — William (Billy) Robert Hicks, 64, passed away on Sept. 7, 2017 in Tucson, Arizona.
Bill was born on Oct. 18, 1952 to Hadley Hugh Hicks and Margaret Urquart Fergus in Bisbee, Arizona. He graduated Bisbee High School in 1971 and went on to obtain degrees from Cochise College, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona. He taught United States History and Political Science at Pima College, Buena High School, and Cochise College. In 1991, he and one of his students Tia Ho (Henderson) adopted one another.
Bill loved the outdoors and sports. He taught rock climbing and coached tennis for many years. He was a registered teaching pro for tennis (PTR, USPTA). He sponsored National Honors Society, Student Council, and Outdoor Adventure Club at Buena High School. He was an active member of the Arizona Education Association (AEA) where he advocated for teacher’s rights. Music was a big part of his life, he enjoyed playing guitar and singing with friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Hadley, and his nephew Mike. He is survived by his wife Linda; two sons, Trevor (Annie) and Jonathan (Stephanie); and four grandchildren, Elijah, Athens, Marley, and Hunter. He is also survived by one sister Quila Rider (Cathy Hicks Mason) as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill was funny, thoughtful and kind. He will be missed but never forgotten.
A memorial service will be held on Oct. 14, 2017 at 5 p.m. at the Vista Park in Bisbee with gathering of family and friends immediately following (potluck).
